While at anchor in the South Pacific, I wrote a book about my voyage. From daunting weather to relationships sweet and sour, wild waves and boat repairs, this very personal memoir shares my many challenges, my search for harmony with nature, and how I come to feel the unity of all things.     dear liz,

    i just read about you in a german magazine and i must say i am very impressed. in my young years i was a professional windsurfer and i love the sea and ocean but i was not good enough to make a living out of it. i always wanted to live on a nice island, opening a cocktail bar and stay a windsufer for ever. but coming from a very simple but loving family i could not rely on any support.

    so i stopped windsurfing when i was 18 and started to think about my own business. a few years later i ended up with a business idea in california where i lived until 2000. originally i am german born and raised but i hate the country and the peoples mentality so that was another reason to go away. since 10 years i am living in monaco but i still miss my life as a windsurfer, being alone on the water, big waves, strong winds and peace.

    i am 46 years old now ( but i still feel like 25 ) and my dream is one day to go around the world with a boat. i am in private equity business with focus on future technologies for a better world. my dream is to build my own yacht which is fully independent from any energy sources other than some solar panels to power our centrifugal invention as the main energy sources for any application in need of power. the vision behind is to use this also as a generator for the 3rd world to make a beginning. drilling for clean drinking water as this is the key for the health of the kids. only if they grow up healthy, we can go to the next step of education and than building an infrastructure. but without free energy it will never change, so thats why i am so much focused on future technologies.

    as much as i love monaco, i also love the simple life especially with no jealousy around you. eating what you catch, fireplace on the beach, watching the stars at night and learning to kite surf as i never did that.

    when i was a child my parents took me all over europe with their VW bully westfalia for going to the most lonely places & beaches and survived from what we catched out of the sea. it was a great time and i am missing it.

    Hello there. I have been following your blog for a few years. In July of this year after 4 years of planning, my family and I are taking off from Oregon to sail south to Mexico and then to the south Pacific. I’ve had my 13 year old daughter look over your website to see the possibilities. She loves to surf and be in the ocean. Somewhere I read that your family boat was a Gulfstar 50. We have a 1977 GS 50 (SV Beach Flea) as well. Would you be willing to email my daughter and provide a few words of inspiration about leaving her friends, having an adventure, and sharing the front berth with her 9 year old brother. Thanks, Greg

    Liz,

    You said that, if you knew it would be this difficult (after ten years at sea), that you might not have cast off?
    Clearly you have had tough times. Do you really mean that? What were your bottom points?
    I argue the opposite. You are one tough person to have dealt with the challenge. (I am an admirer of your ENTIRE skill set,
    I think you GET IT). Although i am your senior (by a few), I am contemplating doing exactly what your doing, however, If I do the work of an ambassador of a cause, it shall be to educate (I have a unique engineering specialty, coupled with professional trade, which gets me …. free lunch and dinner). Liz, are you lonely? Do these things take a back seat to … just meeting new friends, and making solid acquaintances? Do you put a pause on locating someone worthy of your attention?
    I am curious how you deal with this topic. I feel you are a long lost friend. (So you know where I am coming in from, I am divorced, with a grown male child – well to do, and ex is doing OK – no animosity – we went in opposite directions after 23 years). What are your thoughts on being solo on a boat, (please answer only if you are comfortable doing so, I sincerely mean no disrespect, I am trying to understand)?

    As someone who is close to embarking on their own personal journey, (similar to yours), the hills and valleys, how deep are they (for you)?
    Also, your website is terrific, and I commend and thank you for the quotes list (I borrowed 4), and your reading list (Joshua Slocumb was a favorite of mine in my twenties, I shall absorb your list).
    You are clearly one of Gods chosen, may the wind always be in you sails, and a smile cross your face, and a tear of joy in your eye. Shall we ever meet, you are my friend.
