I wrote a book!Learn More
While at anchor in the South Pacific, I wrote a book about my voyage. From daunting weather to relationships sweet and sour, wild waves and boat repairs, this very personal memoir shares my many challenges, my search for harmony with nature, and how I come to feel the unity of all things. The team at Patagonia Books, along with illustrator Daniella Manini, bring my story to life with amazing art and four photo galleries. It’s a work of enormous love, with the intention to inspire others to follow their hearts, protect our planet, and live out their dreams. Ask for it in your local independent bookstore, order online, download as an e-book, or listen to me read it as an audiobook. While at anchor in the South Pacific, I wrote a book about my voyage. I’m excited to share the personal story of my voyage with the world. Book available now!

Galley Grinds…

Posted on Jul 14, 2010 | 2 Comments

Now that I have my galley back, with fresh countertops and a new sink drain, I’m spending a bit more time trying to properly nourish myself. I’d been getting by eating cabbage salads and heavily buttered baguettes for way too long. Sadly, 85-90% of food eaten in Tahiti is imported and the vegetables grown locally […]

Carissa and Bethany Charge Teahupo’o

Posted on Jul 8, 2010 | 7 Comments

I heard a voice outside calling my name, and popped up to see Raimana and Tim and Eric in the familiar orange poti marara. “How’s it going? Are you safe? Everything okay?” Raimana asked. I filled them in briefly on the boatyard complications and promised to see them in the lineup in the coming days… […]

A Fano, A Fano, A Fano ra!

Posted on Jun 30, 2010 | 2 Comments

One afternoon, I looked up from Swell’s foredeck and thought my eyes were fooling me. I rubbed them with my fists, then looked again. I was currently reading “We the Navigators” by David Lewis, about the marvels of ancient navigation in the Pacific, and there, plain as day, came 5 traditional Polynesian sailing canoes!? I’d […]

How High’s the Water, Mama? Three feet high and rising!

Posted on Jun 27, 2010 | 2 Comments

That evening on the mountain top we celebrated finding the flower with fire-roasted lentils, corn, cheese, and passionfruit under a blanket of stars until a downpour put out the fire. We ran for shelter, already soaked, while the sporadic rains slowly penetrated my 25-dollar tent. The night was wet and cold, and the bed of […]

Hope for the Planet?

Posted on Jun 24, 2010 | 3 Comments

I’d searched all over for the sacred flower on the top of the mountain during my birthday camping trip–to no avail. After descending back to sea level, I’d spoken with Mama Rosette, the enormous Tahitian grandmother who sat at her fruit stand alongside the road near the boatyard. “Before,” she told me in a mix […]

Could have heard a fish sneeze: Near disaster at the finish line!

Posted on Jun 21, 2010 | 2 Comments

Then came my most dreaded part–tight maneuvering amongst a bay of expensive yachts. The wind fell to a whisper as we entered the deep horseshoe cove. Swell glided in on our leftover momentum. Unsure of where to go, my crewmate scanned with the binoculars, spotting a herd of sailors on a boat across from a […]

Upwind showdown: Swell versus ‘Birdy’

Posted on Jun 18, 2010 | 2 Comments

Overcome with the rush of competition, we trimmed the sails and urged Swell on as we approached the middle of the fleet. But as the boats ahead of us rounded the upwind buoy, a rainbow of spinnakers sprouted across the lagoon. Just two weeks before, I had traded my only spinnaker (which I had not […]

Practice makes perfect: the T-Cup Regatta

Posted on Jun 17, 2010 | One Comment

Chat about the T-Cup Regatta had buzzed around all week. It was a yearly, just for fun, local regatta, but still up to my gills with projects, I ignored the other sailors’ taunting and tempting. I had no intention of putting the extra work on my plate for some silly race. I explained that I […]

If a pamplemousse falls in a forest…?

Posted on Jun 11, 2010 | 3 Comments

Swell performed well on her first sea trial!…but I gotta catch up on a few stories from the last month, so here goes the first: I threw my bike in the bushes and slowly felt my way toward the barbed wire fence. The full moon had yet to rise, but I knew the fruit-laden pamplemousse […]

When the wind says go!

Posted on Jun 2, 2010 | 6 Comments

Busy last few weeks trying to get through this: So that Swell can sail again… Here’s a sneak peek of Swell’s trial run inside the lagoon last weekend…the first sailing regatta I have entered since I was 11 years old!! Lots of new stories to tell…but the weather’s good to sail to my next destination…so […]
