As a surfer and environmentalist enchanted by remote waves and foreign cultures, I left California aboard my 40-foot sailboat, Swell, in early 2006 with the hope of succeeding at my life-long dream of surf exploration via sailboat. Since then, the voyage has presented more fantastic friends, waves, adventures, natural beauty, opportunities for personal growth and insights than I dreamed possible.
Swell serves as my floating home and transportation. I travel at a pace not much faster than you can run. Weather, swell, and tides dictate my days. This isn’t just a surf trip–it’s a lifestyle, passion, and search for better ways for humanity to inhabit our shared
planet.
Living aboard Swell has allowed me to drastically reduce my daily impact on the earth. Solar and wind power provide my electricity. I live closer to nature, and take time to cherish and appreciate it. I use less, need less, and want less–yet have never felt more fulfilled. At times the boat work seems endless and the uncertainties too daunting, yet without these adversities, the simple joys would never be as sweet.
I enjoy, but don’t exploit the waves I find–leaving out their location so that those who get inspired enough to go looking might still find spots without surf camps and crowds. To experience the sensation of venturing into the unknown and being rewarded is, for me, as precious as the empty waves themselves.
The voyage evolves as I continue to grow and learn. I spent the first year and a half gaining confidence as a captain, with different friends as crew, while traveling down the western coast of Mexico and Central America. After announcing that I intended to sail to the South Pacific alone, my mother volunteered to accompany me, an offer I gladly accepted. We spent 22 unforgettable days sailing across the largest expanse of open ocean on the planet. With the mysteries of blue water sailing behind me, I spent the next year exploring French Polynesia and Kiribati mostly on my own. I enjoyed the contrast of travelling alone–indulging in the freedom of solitude and making choices based on weather and swell forecasts rather than itineraries.
Upon my return from Kiribati, Swell had a mysterious leak, a broken forestay, and was in desperate need of an overhaul. Over a series of labor intensive haul-outs, from late 2008 to 2010, I finally succeeded in locating and replacing the leaky ‘shaft tube’ along with all the other repairs. Water tight and intent to sail again, I set off in 2011-12 on a 2,500 nautical mile loop through French Polynesia’s outer islands.
After another overhaul to Swell in 2013, I was offered a book deal with Patagonia Books, and spent 3 years completing a 100,000+ word manuscript about the voyage thusfar. The book will be released in April of 2018!
I want to sincerely thank all of my friends and faithful readers whose letters, comments, support, and positive thoughts give me the inspiration and energy to continue voyaging and writing. Your feedback and encouragement keep me believing that by developing personal awareness, living our passions, and relentlessly utilizing Love, Light, and Positivity in our everyday lives, we as individuals can collectively change the world for the better!

November 2, 2013Hi Liz,
Your stories are really inspiring for me. I have always wanted to explore the world and be the captain of my own boat. I have only been sailing probably twice in my life, but now that I am 24 I have decided that I will take the small steps and learn to sail. I want to do things that make me happy, and sailing has been a life long dream of mine. It’s people like you who inspire me, and I am grateful I have found this blog. Thanks! Do you have any advice for a first timer?
Captain lizzy
November 27, 2013Kellee! Insist that what you love be what you do…and it will come to fruition naturally. Put yourself near sailing, boats, and whatever you love in any way you can and the rest will fall into place. Best to you, Sister!! love Liz

February 20, 2015Aloha, Liz,
Someone put a link on Facebook, so I met you there and got thoroughly jealous. I sailed my ketch Nereus some 50,000 miles, most of it in the Pacific, an immense privilege and a bag of wonderful memories. Now tied to the land on Maui, a fruit farmer without a boat any more, I can get a bit nostalgic.
If you read the excellent Pacifika Truthfully blog you may have seen a recent review of my book “Reach For Paradise”, which the reviewer kindly calls “without the slightest doubt one of the finest publications regarding the Pacific Islands.”
Reads like a plug, I suppose it is… anyway, if you get to Maui, let us know

March 7, 2015Hi Liz,
Totally inspiring you are…..
I’m diving into sailing again and soon, surfing after years of being on a different path. I can hardly sleep at night as I am getting closer and closer to owning my first larger boat.
I lived in Santa Barbara for 10 years and will return in 3 weeks for more offshore sailing courses. From there, I may be purchasing a 40′ boat in Canada and then another adventure begins. Will be bringing the boat down to The U.S. Virgin Islands and after that?
Love your wisdom, simplicity, and purpose. I can relate to all of it.
Connect with me if you wish.
All the best to you on your journeys, Mark

April 30, 2015Liz,
I found you today on DailyMail.com. What an odd way to find, quite possibly, the most inspirational person in my life.
You are who I would love to be, if I could let go of my family, roots, & home. Your free spirit & overwhelming joy is igniting my light.
You must have dozens upon dozens of people who write to you, but I am enthralled with your journey & lifestyle.
I live in Minnesota, yet yearn for the ocean. I cling to my family because I love them, but the sea tugs at my heart. My partner & I have discussed moving to be closer to the deep blue, but I would be happy with either life – sandy saltwater air or crisp blue skies over a MN farm. But I wonder if I would always wonder “what if?”.
I have no sense of what to write anymore. Half of me wants to write in all caps “take me with you, I succumb to the life you possess!” while the other half is saying “be happy with where you are, self, never look for more. You wouldn’t want to give up your amazing job & close distance to your family for a life you aren’t sure of where will take you & how it will affect your happiness.” I’m torn, with so many emotions.
So I will finish this long comment by saying Be well, take care, enjoy that life you lead that half of me desires, && stay free.
Lasting love from sister Ashley ♥

May 2, 2015Dearest Ashley…I love you and thank you for your sincere letter. just remember that if you decide to go and be near the sea for a while, you can always go back…but i understand needing to be near your family. i miss mine so so much. May 1, 2015Hi Liz,
Can you add a few blog sections to cover:
1) Storm stories. French Polynesia isnt known for calm seas, in fact my New Zealand friends have finally quit sailing because it became too rough. We’re interested in how you handled weather, heaving-to, what happened, how you got through storms. Also, what did you find out there–floating trash, keel hitting submerged debris like ship containers, etc.
2) Finances. How did you handle the costs of sailing from the beginning? I see you have sponsors, but sailing for nine years (including haul outs) is a lot of sponsoring and spending. Also, we’d like to know how the boat fared, what went wrong, costs to fix. What does it cost today to cruise a 40-foot boat?
3) The boat. How do you feel about a Cal 40 now? What would you like instead? What has been learned to make you want to keep or replace the boat? Still like 40 feet and this style of rigging? How did you get parts and sails replaced? What equipment has proven most valuable? What was added or subtracted over the years? How are the smells and hull cracks?
4) Encounters with other boats and people–pirates, lunatics, thieves, vandals. Do you pack weapons on the boat?
I admire your commitment and bravery and wish you stay safe always. Charles

May 4, 2015Hi Captain Liz,
I’m a 24 years old chinese man. I saw a news about you on my phone today and really love you story, it said that you are seeking for a partner, but when I found this website, seeing that Instagram ” May 3: I’d like to clarify the recent misleading……”(but I coundn’t see the entire content of this sentance. After Clicking that ” instagram URL”, the internet would miss connection, maybe caused by the network firewall of China), and also I saw a reply of yours said” i am not look for anyone at the moment”. So I want to know if you really need a partner(not now perhaps in the future) or just those news are wrong, if they are true, I can be your sailor ^_^
wish you everyday with wonderful!

May 4, 2015Liz, I found your site like so many others today I’m sure from the Daily Mail article. I am not into sailing but I can definitely appreciate the courage you have to go after your dreams, as well as the grace and humility with which you have accepted and embraced your good fortune. I wish you the best from afar, and hope that others can also be inspired to follow their bliss, as you have done! Looking forward to reading your book when it comes out. Best Wishes, Rui

I’m a huge surfer and aspiring sailor and a huge fan of your lifestyle. I was looking through your page seeing all your surf pics at different spots and wondered. Do you have to like check in with the government in these places or can you just sail right up to a break hop off with your shred sled and go?Thanks

I came across your amazing story today for the first time. Reading about your courageous adventures has inspired me to exist in this crazy world as I have often dreamed of living.
http://www.tresorsdumonde.fr/category/asie/chine/
https://www.facebook.com/LesTresorsDuMonde
Emmanuel

April 5, 2016Liz,
You are an inspiration! Obviously you have heard that before! ;) I stumbled upon an article about you and as soon as I read you sail alone I was intrigued and went to your website to read more. I honestly can’t imagine. You must be so confident in yourself! I have spent my entire life around people. I became a mom super young and now at the age of 38 my sons are 21 and nearly 18 years. I feel like I’ve never been alone. I look forward to reading more about you and how you became so comfortable in your own skin and in this world. Obviously we had a different upbringing as I’ve never lived anywhere other than Kansas and the ocean is no where close. Although I have traveled the world some I have spent very little time on the ocean… Mostly I just fly over them. ;) thank you for sharing your story! I look forward to following your blog posts. Hopefully it will help me grow as a person.
Stay safe! And again thank you for inspiring me! -kansas amy

May 15, 2016It’s a good story and a wonderful life. Easy to be a free spirit and sail the world….
When someone else is paying the bills. We all care about the environment. But most of have to work. Have to pay bills.
Few folks have supportive, well off family or friends paying their way. When you tell others to follow their dreams…love & light and all that touchy-feely stuff, also mention that it takes cash to follow that dream. Are you going to respond to Charles? He wants to know how you do it financially. Since it is quite expensive to buy a boat, then maintain it year after year. Flying home when the need arises, paying for supplies, phones, and all the expenses that accrue when on the seas.
Without money, you would be like most other dreamers. Yearning for adventure and freedom, but stuck punching the clock.
Be more honest with those who admire you. They should really admire the folks supporting you financially.
Captain Liz
May 29, 2016Hi Reality Ron!
It might be better for both of us not to make assumptions before we know the truth about each other. In fact, my father originally helped purchase Swell in 2001 along with Dr Barry Schulyer. Since then I have done it financially ALL on my own–hustle hustle hustle. I do not come from a family with deep pockets. In fact my parents don’t even own a home. My father saw this as an opportunity for me to live my dreams and went out on a limb for me from his savings and i will surely take care of him, financially and otherwise, up to the day he leaves this world if i can! I live modestly, try to be generous, and i believe that my ‘living from my heart and purpose’ is what continues to create enough abundance in my life to keep living my sailing dream. In my experience, your reality is created by your attitude and perspective. I realize that my good fortune in meeting Barry was in some part an unexplained blessing, but i think that it is up to us to create our own serendipity and magic, believe in the power of our dreams, and take risks that earn us the rewards that the universe bestows on all those you are willing to go on faith toward their dreams and passions. Our own minds are our greatest limitations and i encourage you to envision what you desire and have the courage to go after it fearlessly! Have fun on your journey, Ron! lots of light and positive vibrations to you…liz
Mike
May 20, 2016Until today’s Facebook note, I’ve never heard of you. Although very alluring to think of the carefree exploration, one thought kept coming up-human interaction! Tranquil days lazily sailing from island to island exploring the true wonders of the Earth, but I’d require personal interaction on a daily basis. Oh, i’d love to see many of those tropical locations even to venture to non-tropical areas briefly, but I’d miss my family, my grandchildren and my golf buddies. More power to you and should you swing by Eastern central Florida, stop by and say hi.

May 29, 2016Hi Liz!
Synchronicity brought me to you!
I have been an overseas teacher for the past 7 years and have decided to leave it all behind and follow my heart. I will be working on an organic farm in Canada for the upcoming year but have been thinking of getting a sailboat and sailing the world; a childhood dream of mine. The thing is, I don’t know the first thing about sailing or how to bring this dream to life.
I have put this dream in the hands of the Universe and asked the Universe to give me a sign if it was a journey meant for me and today your story came into my life.
You are an inspiration, truly! What you have done and are continuing to do has given me the strength, motivation and will to follow through and make my dream a reality.
Thank you for inspiring me!
Looking forward to reading more about your adventures.
Safe travels!
Love and light always,
Heidi

September 4, 2016Any tips for leaving the rat race and not looking back? Seems as though the universe is trying to keep me out of it and I plan to head out on a 44 beneteau with my boyfriend this fall but not sure if I should plan to come back. Looks like the sea has treated you well! Love you pics–so raw and real.

January 4, 2017Hi Kelsy!
THere is no real OUT to the rat race as far as I have found. I’m still in it, just in my own way. But I do believe that we can choose how and where to do it! the trick is using your passion to create a niche for yourself in this dynamic new world of social media and adventure. All the best to you on your voyage! :D liz

October 31, 2016Hi Captain Liz,
12 years ago I met you surfing Ollies down in costa–I didn’t know of your story at the time, but you and your travel companions left quite the impression on me. It wasn’t until years later that I read of “the Swell” and put two and two together.
Since that time i’ve been balancing remote surf trips and studying for my profession of dentistry.
Last year I had the pleasure of spending a week with Portugal’s big wave surfer Joana Andrade in Panama–we’ve been in contact since and have discussed the idea of a medical mission/surf trip to give back to the people of countries which host our transient visits. I’ve heard other world travelers describe a benefit of travel as a “forced self reflection”, by comparing the trivial problems of home with the “real life” problems of an impoverished working class people. I myself have benefitted while traveling to 3rd world nations on surf trips…not only through the value of an American Dollar, but through the reaffirmation of our comfortable lifestyle..a perspective that often comes from the expense of someone else’s hardship.
We are feeling the need to give back. My wife (A medical doctor) Joana and myself want to hit to the open seas to find people of rural surfing villages who are need of medical and dental care. We are completely self reliant, and have the portable instruments and medication to care for patients in the most rural of settings. We have done medical missions to the Caribbean before and they have been life changing experiences. The reason we are reaching out to you is because we have similar mission statements. We want to find awe, beauty, and adventure in our travels…but want to do so with the conscious intent of spreading light, positivity, love, and in our case, much needed care to people who are desperate need of it. If you think this is something you would like to implement into part of your travel experience, or have connected with a community that you would like to help, please feel free to reach out.
