Play Your Instrument! Passion Paves the Path… “That was Easy!”
Beyond my immediate family, I started taking notice of other people I knew who were pursuing their passions, too. My buddy Mark is doing stand-up comedy alongside his teaching job, Sean is a proud new Dad who carved a niche for himself shaping surfboards and started Forward screen-printing company. Blakeney is charging full steam ahead with her artistic creativity–building huge ocean-inspired sculptures out of epoxy, and custom stand-up paddles and body-surfing hand planers out of agave and balsa with shell inlays! Shannon is chasing adventure, writing books, and capturing the beauty of this world through her lens! Christie is an incredible new mom, Anna is showing people how to fix themselves with physical therapy, Nicole is designing shoes at Nike, Crystal is promoting green, healthy living on the North Shore, Marty is still the most amazing rigger on the planet, James is pioneering alternative energy motors on sailboats, Heidi has brought her hilarious perspective to the world of women and bicycling through her writing and blog…and these were just a few! They are making their passions fit into their lives without question, and in doing so, playing their ‘instrument’ for the symphony of the world–living their role and loving it, even when it’s hard. I’d also recently heard from a high school buddy, Erik Hjermstad, while I was in San Diego, who had taken his love for water photography and created a business building custom camera water housings–Del Mar Housing Projects. He started building water housings for himself 10 years ago out of his garage and shaped his desire to build the best water housing possible into what is now a full-on custom water housing operation in San Marcos, Ca. He and his crew of like-minded employees offered to help get the Voyage of Swell geared up with a housing for my best camera, yay! So I went out to pick it up and see what they were all about…
We caught up while he toured me around the compound. Erik’s good energy was electric! The benefits of putting heart and time into your passions seemed so obvious in him! I thanked him for my mega-discounted housing and he even gave me a Staple’s ‘Easy’ button to provide instant bursts of uplifting positivity after tough boat projects! I was off and running in a cloud of good vibrations, envisioning my next season of capturing the beauty of the South Pacific underwater…learning as much as possible…living clean, green, and simply…loving adventure, people, culture, and language…embracing my passion for saving our precious planet on the Voyage of Swell…and sharing it all with you. Let passion pave the path!
