Where the Wind and The Water are Free: Casual dining with Jimmy and Quino
I woke with a headache but couldn’t help but notice the size of the whitewater on the reef. The north swell was way up and I couldn’t rest despite my lack of sleep. I finally thumbed a ride to the reef and surfed away the afternoon and the headache. Upon my return, Jess and Teiva called to say they could use some help at the bar that night, so despite feeling like I might die of fatigue, I put myself together to look presentable enough to customers and paddled my longboard carefully ashore so as not to wet my shorts. (I’d left my dinghy with a friend to make it easier to come to the show on last minute notice.) I leaned on the bar and asked Jess how she was feeling after the big night. She rolled her eyes a bit and continued to count change for the impatient customer to my left.
“But it looks like we won’t need you after all, it’s not really that busy.” She said.
Relieved, I backed off and looked left just in time to see Jimmy and his friend duck under the shaggy palm fronds of the low-hanging BBYC roof. He took off his jacket and walked over to where I stood.
“Hey, Liz.” He smiled. “Hi Jess. Well, it looks like we came to the right place.”
“What a great place…Can we get some food here?” He asked.
“Of course!” I replied and showed them out to the patio.
“Are you busy?” His friend, Quino, asked. “Why don’t you join us for dinner?”
Could I possibly refuse?
“How was your day?” They asked.
“Not bad,” I replied. “I hitched a ride to the pass and went surfing. Saltwater always helps my headache.”
“Where?!” He asked excitedly.
“Right there,” I pointed out toward the pass. “It very rarely breaks, but today was pretty nice.”
